Well, another week. Not much to say. Still looking for work and I’ve made all the calls I can today, which just leaves the follow-up calls for the rest of the week.
I have another “Does It Play On a Mac?” episode up about Star Trek Online, which you can see here. I also had another voiceover audition this morning, so it’s good that more opportunities are coming from a new direction.

Another week, another series of opportunities.
I worked last week a place I’ve worked at several times this year. There was quite a lot of jobs to complete, but by Friday I was working on assignments due on Tuesday.
I’ve had two voiceover auditions this week, something that’s never happened to me before, but will hopefully lead to more opportunities.
I’m currently looking for work, freelance or permanent. We’ll see what the week brings.

This was one of those weeks that reminds me how quickly circumstances can change for a freelancer.
I was contacted through a recruiter about working on a Powerpoint presentation. The job would have been for three days with a lot of overtime. I was told I’d be working in an environment where people were already stressed and working against a looming deadline. I had actually finished a job not too long ago with very similar goals and environment so I had no problem heading into this one. I was called back and asked if I was SURE I’d be OK in this job and did I understand what I was getting into. I assured my recruiter that I was fine with everything, and I would be able to handle the situation. On Friday I was finally confirmed for the gig and was set to receive all the information I’d need to get to the job.
Ten minutes later I got a call saying that the job was cancelled. The company decided they already had what they needed to finish the job.
Later that afternoon I had an interview for a six-week gig in Malibu. The listing was short asking for a “Mac savvy PA”. They scheduled me for an interview after I’d sent a cover letter and resume. I has asked for elaboration about the job. The response said “We’ll fill you in at the interview”. More interesting still was the address was in Culver City, and a residential address at that. Upon arrival and talking for a few minutes, it turned out the job was actually for a Personal Assistant rather than a Production Artist (with duties like finding out who the indigenous Native Americans of the Malibu property were so that one could be found to bless the ground and the businesses that would eventually occupy it). The interviewer even said she wished I had stopped her from finishing her description of the job so that no more valuable time would be wasted.
Then not an hour later, I get a call to go work for a company I’ve already worked for off-and-on for the past month.
Yes, freelance can really challenge you to keep an even footing and a level head. Some days are more challenging than others.

This is definitely an exciting time for me. The long-running position I worked at for basically all of 2009 has wrapped up. Pretty good for a position I was originally contracted to for three days! I’ve been able to use my time to refresh my connections with job recruiters and update my information with the job boards, as well as educate myself on what the most up-to-date job boards are.
I have also had the opportunity to experience other work environments and expand my experience:
- I’ve spent several weeks at one corporation’s Westwood headquarters converting and updating flyers, postcards, emails, and other print and web media with InDesign and Illustrator. I worked with a web-based content-management system for uploaded and approving proofs with numerous branch offices.
- I worked for several days at an ad agency building a full presentation in Keynote. I built a new template in line with the company’s identity, created and adapted graphics with Photoshop and Illustrator, created animations to illustrate certain concepts, consolidated data from multiple sources, included embedded video, and created a PDF version with additional pages as a ‘leave-behind’ for after the presentation.
As of today, my availability is open and I am making my rounds and ready to experience even more! Here’s to having more to report on my Friday follow-up!

The start of a new month. Santa Monica is still overcast in the mornings, but I’m told that it will start burning off soon enough.
Work is keeping me busy with working on mechanicals of a new pahse of a campaign. A lot of searching through stock photo sites to get the right photos for the mechs.
I’m still seeking a permanent position, and work is retaining me for another week.
Hey everyone. Things are going well with me. Still being retained at my current position, still looking for permanent work.
I am still working my way through the Dreamweaver tutorials from Lynda.com. Some good stuff there. However, I did get to work on a mockup of a website in Flash for what could possibly be the company’s new website. There will be more to come in the future on that. The work really got me more acquainted with Actionscript 3.0. I come into Flash from the graphics and animation side, so I’m not a coder. However, in order to make simple buttons and navigate in Flash projects, it takes more coding than before, so it’s an environment I have to get comfortable with. I don’t know how well the code I created translates to the actual website if it comes down to it, but we’ll see.
Happy May, everyone!
Things have been moving well at where I’m at. A lot of work coming up for a client moving into new territories after a successful launch. Still plenty to keep me busy. I’m still working my way through the Dreamweaver tutorials and am still keen on expanding my skills.
Still looking for a permanent position.
Hope everyone has a great week!
The weather got very nice over the weekend.
Well, I’ve finished the lynda.com After Effects Essential Traning tutorial! I have to see it’s really peaked my interest, plus I’ve been told I will be putting my knowledge to work soon, so I hope to add some motion work to my portfolio soon. I’m planning on doing the Beyond the Basics tutorial, but first I’ve started in on the Dreamweaver tutorial to change things up a bit.
I’m still being retained at my current position, but I’m still seeking a permanent job.

I really got through a lot of the After Effects tutorial from lynda.com and I hope to finish it out this week. The tutorial really just touches the surface on a lot of what it can do. I believe I will have to advance to the Beyond the Basics tutorial and dig a little deeper. I’m being encouraged to learn more about After Effects at my current position, so I’m hoping to get some real-world experience with it soon!
I’m still being retained at my current position. I am still seeking a permanent post.
